Chimney & Fireplace FAQ’s

  • The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) Standard 211 states:

“Chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances. Cleaning, maintenance, and repairs shall be done if necessary.”

  • Here are some signs that indicate it's time to have your chimney inspected:

    • Creosote buildup: If you notice a thick, black buildup inside your chimney, it may be creosote, which is a highly flammable substance. An inspection can determine the extent of the buildup and help prevent chimney fires.

    • Odd smells: If you smell smoke or a strong odor coming from your chimney, it may indicate a problem that needs to be inspected.

    • Damaged masonry: If you see cracks, missing bricks, or other signs of damage in your chimney, it's important to have it inspected to determine if repairs are necessary.

    • Reduced draft: If you notice a reduced draft in your fireplace, it may mean there is a blockage in your chimney that needs to be removed.

    • Age: If your chimney is over 20 years old, it's recommended to have it inspected annually to ensure it's in good condition and functioning properly.

By having your chimney inspected regularly, you can help ensure that it's safe and efficient, and prevent potential problems from developing.

  • Some signs that indicate it's time to have your gas fireplace inspected:

    • Yellow flame: If the flame in your gas fireplace burns yellow instead of blue, it may indicate a problem with the gas line or ventilation system that needs to be inspected.

    • Strong gas odor: If you smell a strong gas odor coming from your fireplace, it's important to have it inspected as soon as possible, as this can be a sign of a gas leak.

    • Decreased efficiency: If you notice that your gas fireplace is not heating as well as it used to or has become less efficient, it may indicate a problem that needs to be inspected.

    • Physical damage: If you see any physical damage to your gas fireplace, such as cracks in the firebox or chimney, it's important to have it inspected to ensure it's safe to use.

    • Age: If your gas fireplace is over 10 years old, it's recommended to have it inspected annually to ensure it's in good condition and functioning properly.

By having your gas fireplace inspected regularly, you can help ensure that it's safe and efficient, and prevent potential problems from developing.

  • Our CSIA/NFI certified technician will evaluate your chimney, wood burning fireplace, gas fireplace or wood/pellet stove to ensure they are operationally sound, ready for use and if they need any cleaning or servicing.

Our chimney inspection starts inside with our technician visually inspecting the firebox, smoke chamber, smoke shelf, damper and bottom portion of the flue tiles or liner. From there our technician will move outside to assess the exterior of your chimney and the upper inside section. This stage covers visual inspection of the masonry/brickwork, crown, flashing, upper section of the flue tiles or liner and chimney cap.

If you are receiving a gas fireplace inspection our technician will visually inspect all areas of your appliance to ensure it is good working order and safe for operation. The fireplace technician will assess the glass doors, seal, log set placement, wiring, gas line & connections, ignition, remote/wall switch, pilot light, burners, flame height and the ventilation exhaust.

If our technician finds that during the visual inspection your chimney needs swept or your gas appliance needs cleaned or serviced, they will perform those services utilizing tarps, (when applicable), and high powered vacuums with HEPA filters to ensure your house remains clean.

While performing the visual inspection our technician will complete a comprehensive inspection report that will be included and sent to you along with your invoice which can be paid securely online or by mailing a check.

If there are any recommendations for additional work that may need to be done to your chimney or appliance a quote/estimate with photo documentation will be generated and emailed to you for review and approval. Once approved we will work with you to schedule a date to come out and complete any needed recommendations or repairs.
